Miga, PhD, proposed the first issue ever devoted specifically to image-guided procedures, robotic interventions and modeling.<\/p>\n<p>Not only did SPIE welcome the idea, but it has become the largest subscribed special issue to date with 30 papers submitted.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6508\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170835\/Miga-and-Simpson-2-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"121\" height=\"121\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170835\/Miga-and-Simpson-2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170835\/Miga-and-Simpson-2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170835\/Miga-and-Simpson-2-80x80.jpg 80w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170835\/Miga-and-Simpson-2-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170835\/Miga-and-Simpson-2-190x190.jpg 190w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170835\/Miga-and-Simpson-2.jpg 429w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 121px) 100vw, 121px\" \/>Lead guest editor Miga, 91ºÚÁÏÍø Institute for Surgery and Engineering (VISE) steering committee member, worked with guest editor, Amber Simpson, a VISE alumna currently in the Department of Surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, to ensure submitted papers were subject to vigorous peer evaluation by the SPIE Medical Imaging: Image-Guided Procedures, Robotic Interventions, and Modeling Conference scientific review committee.<\/p>\n<p>Acceptance into the journal\u2019s special issue also included the opportunity to present during a special event workshop at the SPIE Medical Imaging 2018 conference. Dongqing Zhang, whose paper detailed post-operative process in cochlear implantation to improve hearing outcomes, was among the participants.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6509 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170835\/IMG_5617-copy-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"154\" height=\"118\" \/>\u201cI think the area of image-guided surgical procedures, robotic interventions and modeling has been very active and people in this field are indeed contributing greatly to humanity\u2019s welfare by developing cutting-edge engineering techniques for surgeries,\u201d said Zhang, a graduate student in electrical engineering and computer science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a graduate student, I am excited to author a journal paper as a part of this special issue. I see this as great recognition as well as encouragement from this research community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6510\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170835\/39813263874_1770193855_z-2-300x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"121\" height=\"107\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170835\/39813263874_1770193855_z-2-300x264.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170835\/39813263874_1770193855_z-2-113x100.jpg 113w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170835\/39813263874_1770193855_z-2.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 121px) 100vw, 121px\" \/>Jon Heiselman, a graduate student in biomedical engineering and VISE trainee, was also afforded the special opportunity with his accepted journal paper.<\/p>\n<p>What began as a simple call for ideas, turned into an empowering experience for VISE graduate students, who through their work have the opportunity to impact medical advancements in patient care more quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeer reviewed journal papers are a big deal for our grad students,\u201d Miga said. \u201cOur students are expected to contribute to science and engineering in significant ways.
