  {"id":6558,"date":"2018-03-16T10:02:49","date_gmt":"2018-03-16T15:02:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/vise\/?p=6558"},"modified":"2018-03-16T10:05:26","modified_gmt":"2018-03-16T15:05:26","slug":"vise-affiliate-wins-best-student-paper-award-at-ismr2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/vise\/vise-affiliate-wins-best-student-paper-award-at-ismr2018\/","title":{"rendered":"VISE affiliate wins Best Student Paper Award at ISMR2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two graduate student affiliates of the 91ºÚÁÏÍø Institute for Surgery and Engineering were recognized for their innovative work at the inaugural IEEE International Symposium in Medical Robotics.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6562\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170835\/Garbin-award-photo-300x175.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170835\/Garbin-award-photo-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170835\/Garbin-award-photo-768x448.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170835\/Garbin-award-photo-650x379.jpg 650w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170835\/Garbin-award-photo-150x87.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170835\/Garbin-award-photo-340x200.jpg 340w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2018\/03\/19170835\/Garbin-award-photo.jpg 1057w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Nicolo Garbin, a graduate student in mechanical engineering and member of the STORM Lab, won the Best Student Paper Award as lead author for the paper, \u201cA Disposable Continuum Endoscope Using Piston-driven Parallel Bellow Actuator.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe award is the results of a great team effort that involves people at 91ºÚÁÏÍø and at the University of Leeds,\u201d Garbin said.<\/p>\n<p>The STORM Lab designs and creates miniature non-invasive capsule robots used in colonoscopies and abdominal surgeries.<\/p>\n<p>Garbin said he was grateful to all the co-authors and \u201cwould particularly like to thank Long Wang (ARMA Lab member) for all the hours spent together during evenings and weekends to help making this work valuable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rashid Yasin, a graduate student in mechanical engineering, was a finalist for the same award for his paper titled, \u201cUsing Continuum Robots for Force-controlled Semi-autonomous Organ Exploration and Registration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A member of the ARMA Lab, Yasin says his research helps refine the abilities of continuum and flexible robotic structures to explore soft anatomy during minimally invasive procedures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am honored by the nomination,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cAttending ISMR was a great opportunity to meet with and see the work of many of the leaders of the medical robotic field. This is the first year of the conference and I am looking forward to attending in future years as it grows in size and impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The STORM and ARMA Lab, with its focus on design modeling and control of robotics for medical applications, collaborate frequently. Their proximity \u2013 both are housed on the same floor in Olin Hall \u2013 supports smooth communication and efficient task management, Garbin said.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium was held in Atlanta.
